Controller operation

The smart stair controller OMEGA Exclusive is the heart of the smart stairway LED lighting system. Its basic function is impressive, smooth lighting switching on for a specified time. In the standby mode of the controller, the lamps can be off or slightly illuminated. When activated by any stair sensor, the full lighting is switched on in accordance with the selected lighting / dimming style, to choose from: LED WAVE (successively, lamp by lamp) and SIMULT (simultaneously). After the set lighting time, lights are automatically switched off or dimmed to the set backlight value. Some other functions include: dimming, lighting origination on the mid-floor, warning when the lights are to go off, prolongation of lighting, permanent lighting, operation of the Master lamp, blocking the lighting during the day.

The controller operation can be adapted to the user needs by changing the configuration settings with the use of the mobile application. After configuration, the controller can operate independently of the application because it is a stand-alone device. It can also be remotely controlled using a smartphone / tablet (see the APPLICATION tab).

This stair controller has 3 modes of operation: MAX, DAY and NIGHT, switched automatically by dusk switch and / or clock. Different parameters can be defined for each mode, adjusting the controller operation at different times of the day to the user’s preferences.

The controller can support both dimmable and non-dimmable lamps. In the case of dimmable lamps, switching on and off of each lamp is smooth (gradual change of brightness), and in the case of non-dimmable lamps – sharp.

The direction of the LED wave depends on the place, where the controller activation is originated: it can go up (when the controller is activated at the bottom of the stairs), down (activated at the top of the stairs) and up and down (activated by a sensor located on the mid-floor).

Subsequent smooth switching on/off of lamps with the effect of “blur”

Gradual, smooth brightening or dimming of each lamp; when switching on, the next lamps may begin to light up before the previous ones have reached their maximum brightness. The wavefront is brighter than its tail. The LED wave runs smoothly along the stairs – up, down or both directions from the mid-floor. Switching off is the opposite: subsequent lamps may begin to gradually dim before the previous lamps reach the set backlight value.

Mounting of the probe: outside or inside in the area of the stairs (the controller is intelligent – it does not react to light which it turned on itself; this is an important advantage over external twilight switches, whose light probes must be installed outdoors, in a place not lit by artificial light). The light probe should be connected to the DIS input of the controller.

ATTENTION: Instead of the light probe, another device (e.g. a switch or astronomical clock) or potential-free output of any Smart Home system can be connected to the DIS input.

Application

OMEGA smartLEDs mobile application ensures comfortable configuration of the OMEGA stair controller, as well as easy operation, diagnostics and commissioning of the completed installation. Communication of the application with the controller is carried out using the Bluetooth Low Energy 4.0 protocol.

APPLICATION SCREENS

The application is divided into several screens: CONTROL PANEL, PREFERENCES, CONFIGURATION, SERVICE AND COMMISSIONING, BLUETOOTH. System operation is intuitive. There are 2 levels of access: user level and installer level (password protected). A full description of the application can be found in the user manual (see the DOCUMENTATION tab).

FREE APPLICATION TESTING BEFORE PURCHASING THE SYSTEM

You can review the application before purchasing of the controller. You can download it free of charge. However, for obvious reasons, some functions will be active only after connecting to the controller.

BLUETOOTH SCREEN

Connecting to the controller – The application automatically scans for smartLEDs devices and then, if found, automatically connects to the controller.
Displaying the status of communication between the controller and the application, as well as messages related to exchange of information between the controller and the application.
It is also possible to disconnect and reconnect the controller to the application on this screen.

SERVICE and COMMISSIONING SCREEN (installer level, password protected)

The SERVICE and COMMISSIONING screen allows you to quickly start new installation, as well as to easily diagnose the causes of incorrect operation of the installation.

The screen provides 3 diagnostic functions:

checking lamps connected to the controller
checking the operation of the controller itself (regardless of the state of the control inputs)
checking the status and settings of controller inputs

PASSWORD SCREEN

Password protection for the transition from the user level (screens: CONTROL PANEL and PREFERENCES) to the installer level (screens: CONFIGURATION and SERVICE AND COMMISSIONING) in order to prevent an unauthorized person from reckless changing the installation parameters.

The factory default password is “0000”. It should be changed and then protected against loss. If the password is lost, one can restore the “0000” default password by using the rescue password (available only to purchasers of the controller).

Sensor properties

DELTA is a digital diffused optical sensor which, due to its unique properties, can work as a high-quality stair sensor, in cooperation with smartLEDs LED lighting stair controllers. The sensor works by sending narrow beams of infrared invisible light and measuring reflected values returning to the sensor.

The basic operating mode of the sensor is the distance mode, which is used to detect objects within a fixed distance from the sensor. The sensor has an adjustable range of 30-200 cm, so it can be used both for typical stairs 100 cm wide, as well as for wide stairs and passages up to 230 cm. Thanks to the ability to set the range and narrow detection angle, the sensor does not react to people passing nearby the stairs, which is a great advantage compared to popular PIR sensors. Due to the one-piece structure (the receiver and transmitter are located in one housing), the sensor can be used for open stairs (openwork or built-up on one side only).

When switched to motion mode, the sensor works well in the case of closed stairs, with bright wall reflecting light at the opposite side. In motion mode, DELTA sensor detects a change in the signal reflected from the objects moving within set distance from the sensor. The sensor utilizes microprocessor signal processing algorithms ensuring increased immunity to interference, light fluctuations and changes in operating conditions.

Changing the sensor mode and range adjustment is carried out in a convenient way with the help of a small potentiometer located under the removable cover on the front of the sensor.

Easy electrical mounting of the sensor

The outputs are located on the terminal block at the back of the sensor:

+12V – power supply voltage (+8VDC – 24VDC)
GND – power supply ground (0V)
OUT – OC type digital output (NPN)

Mounting methods for sensors

The small dimensions of the sensor (diameter without cover 35mm, depth 25mm) allow discrete flush mounting.

It is recommended to install sensors at a height of 80-100cm.

It is a flush mounting box.

It is recommended to fix the mounting box in the wall and then to put the sensor into it. Because the dimensions of the flush mounting box match those of the sensor, the sensor fits into it quite tightly and does not require additional fixing. The sensor cover covers the flush box at the front.

The 60mm flush installation box adapter enables the aesthetic installation of a stair sensor in a Φ60mm standard installation box.

The adapter consists of two elements: the adapter socket (black element) and the adapter cover (color to choose). The adapter cover is made of ABS plastic, which can be painted.

To mount the sensor:
(1) Remove the sensor cover and insert the sensor (without sensor cover) into the adapter socket,
(2) Screw the adapter socket into the 60mm flush installation box
(3) Latch the adapter cover on the adapter socket. (To remove the adapter cover, lift it slightly at the top.)

Installation

Depicted above is a typical diagram of a stair LED installation with OMEGA controller, with common power supply of the controller, sensors and lamps, with optional Master lamps, activated by DELTA stair sensors, with the use of integrated dusk switch.

Assumptions:

23 groups of LED lamps (12 lamps – below the mid-floor, 11 lamps – above the mid-floor; lamps L22 and L23 as an alternative to Master lamp,
optional Master lamp (L22 and L23) as ceiling/wall light or handrail backlight (e.g. LED strip),
one common power supply for the controller, DELTA sensors and LED lamps (typically: 12VDC),
automatic switching on of lamps by DELTA stair sensors (alternatively: pushbuttons, photocells, weight sensors, etc.),
DAY mode switching on/off with the integrated dusk switch
